The itinerant open air marketplaces in southern Sweden have always been surrounded with myths and rumors. The markets used to be huge events, especially Kivik’s market, with circuses, amusement rides, burlesque and strip shows, magicians, fortune tellers and vaudeville theaters. During the days thousands of salesmen sold everything from foods, crafts and furniture to livestock and at night fighting greasers and drunken teens took over. Most of this is gone now and what once was a rural concern, called a “sin’s nest”, is now a destination for family outings- even though some glimpses of the past are still there if you keep your eyes open and know where to look.
